Marketing KPIs Template
Track and convert more leads with these 12 Key Indicators
12 KPIs included
About this template
A carefully selected set of Marketing focused KPIs aimed at marketing and advertising professional. These KPIs can help track and improve performance in areas such as lead generation, conversion rates and marketing costs. Each KPI selected for this template has been proposed by marketing professionals for a best practice approach to measuring your marketing efforts.
What this template measures
This template is a loop rather than a list. Marketing Spend to Date and Marketing Budget Remaining cover what the effort costs and how much runway is left in the year. The audience side is Unique Website Visitors plus the four Social Reach KPIs, one each for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. Advertising Response Rate and Visitor to conversion Rate measure how much of that audience did something, and Inbound Leads is what comes out of the other end.
Cost Per Lead is where the two halves meet. Divide the money by the leads and you get a single number that moves when either side changes. That's why it belongs next to spend and volume rather than in a report of its own. Net Promoter Score is the odd one out, and that's deliberate. Reach and lead counts say nothing about whether the product lived up to the marketing, and NPS is the cheapest check on that.
Twelve KPIs is a working set, and you are not stuck with it. Plans include unlimited KPIs, so break out email, organic search, or a second brand if that's how your budget is split. If you want a wider menu to pick from, these 28 marketing KPI must haves cover most of what gets asked for.
Who uses it
Marketing managers run this set week to week. Is spend tracking sensibly against the year, and are Inbound Leads keeping pace with what sales expects? Channel and social owners work a narrower slice, the four Social Reach KPIs and Advertising Response Rate, where the only question is whether this month's activity moved anything. Agencies use the same twelve as a client-facing summary, because it answers what the retainer bought without anyone building a deck.
Founders and finance ask one thing of it. They read Cost Per Lead against Marketing Budget Remaining, which tells them whether the next chunk of budget is likely to buy more than the last one did.
Setting targets
Import first, set targets second. Most of these KPIs have no sensible default. A good Cost Per Lead in enterprise software would be a disaster in ecommerce, and Visitor to conversion Rate depends as much on your traffic mix as on your website. Enter two or three periods of history, look at the spread, then put the target just outside your normal range so hitting it means something.
Some of these are better judged by direction than by a fixed number. Marketing Budget Remaining should fall in step with the time left in the period. Unique Website Visitors and the Social Reach KPIs are trend measures, so last quarter plus a bit is more honest than a round number someone liked the look of. With no history at all, Kip, the AI built into SimpleKPI, can suggest indicative benchmarks to start from. Those are AI estimates rather than real peer data, so treat them as a placeholder until your own baseline takes over.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Importing all twelve, then updating four of them. Pick the update frequency for each KPI on the day it lands. Monthly data entered monthly beats weekly data entered whenever someone remembers.
- Letting Net Promoter Score go stale, because it needs a survey rather than a report. Either commit to collecting it or take it off the set. An empty chart costs more trust than a missing KPI.
- Chasing Cost Per Lead down without watching what happens behind it. Cheap leads that never convert make the number look excellent and the pipeline worse.
- Leaving the names exactly as imported. Rename them to the words your team already says out loud, so nobody has to translate the dashboard in a meeting.

Frequently asked questions
How do I import the Marketing KPIs template into SimpleKPI?
Pick the template when you set up your SimpleKPI account and all twelve KPIs are created with their names and descriptions already in place. You add the units, targets, and update frequencies from there. The 14-day trial needs no credit card, so you can import the set and look at it before deciding anything.
Can I change the KPIs in this template?
Yes. Rename, delete, or add whatever you like once it's imported, since nothing in the set is fixed. Plans include unlimited KPIs and dashboards, so extending it costs nothing extra. A sensible first pass is to drop anything you can't feed with data yet and add it back when you can.
How do I get data into these KPIs?
Manual entry, spreadsheet imports, integrations, or the developer API, and each KPI can use a different method. Spend and lead figures are often typed in weekly, while website and social numbers suit an import or a feed. Match the method to how often the number actually changes.
What targets should I set for these marketing KPIs?
Set them from your own baseline wherever you can. Enter a few periods of history first, then put each target just outside your normal range. For trend measures like Unique Website Visitors and the Social Reach KPIs, a direction such as up on last quarter is more useful than a fixed number picked out of the air.
